Jan
the Great©

This is the first
story I ever wrote. |

I
am Jan the Great. I am 12 years old. I got my
“greatness” because my mom says I am being very brave. You
see, I have leukemia and I have lost all of my hair. I feel very
bare. Every month or so, I get this treatment done to me called
chemotherapy. I feel very tired after it is given to me. Mom says
it will cure me one day. I hope so because I am getting very tired
of having to wear wigs all the time. You have no idea how itchy
they are. My family supports me and I am so thankful for them. I
have a mom, a dad, two brothers, and a sister on the way. Also, my
grandpa lives with us ever since my grandma passed away. Mom says
that it is not good for him to live all by himself. Mom is a
dentist, and a part time worker. She says that she works two jobs
to pay off my doctor bills. Well, she doesn’t really tell me,
but I once overheard her talking to my dad. Dad is a janitor at a
local school. I wish I could go to school again. I am too
sick to go to school. I miss my friends and I wish that one day, we
could go to the mall together. My two brothers, Jordan and Pete,
are 15 and 7 years old. Jordan also works, at an ice cream
shop. He sometimes brings a carton of ice cream home. My
grandpa Joe is kind of boring. All he does is lie in his bed and
watch the television. He doesn’t talk much. So that is my
family. Tomorrow, I am going to Nevada to see a doctor there who
might be able to cure me. Mom says that she is very proud of me
because I have gone to so many doctors and I have been patient with all
of them. She says that I will always be her little Jan the Great.
